Isle of Palms: A Lowcountry Tale
Published in Hardcover by Berkley Pub Group (24 June, 2003)
Author: Dorothea Benton Frank

A Low Country Pleasure
Hello-she's baaaaaaaack- that low country lovin, livin, writin, Dorothea Benton Frank.

As with her previous 2 releases, ISLE OF PALMS, is also set in the author's beloved birthplace region and is a tribute to everything from it's salty marshes to it's eccentric inhabitants.

IOP is the author's best book yet.Frank provides equal parts drama, southern heritage and razor sharp one liners(reminiscent of Jersey girl, Evanovich).

The character of Anna Lutz Abbot is richly layered and supported by an ensemble cast that is flawed, but, loving and loyal.Anna's narrative is truly southern as well as sassy!

After reading all 3 of Frank's books, I have added a much needed, soul feeding, low country visit to my 'things to do before I die list.'

The 2 days spent reading this book was a long over due treat and well worth the wait since PLANTATION. My only regret is I didn't have my feet and backside firmly planted in the sandy beaches of South Carolina while reading it!

Miss Dottie Has Done It Again!
This is the third book and the third time I was held hostage by this author's words! I loved this book so much that I couldn't get a lick of work done until I finished it! The characters are deeply defined to the extent where I find I am missing them. I want to go to the Isle of Palms and have my hair done by Anna herself!

Great story! I only wish there were more Jims in this world!! :::sign:::

A wonderful story from the south
This one called out to me, and after reading the book, I know why. This was one of the best tales from the south I have ever read. I could not put the book down for a minute! The author truly brought me to the Isle of Plams, so much that I was looking at real estate down there myself! Bravo!

Anna is an incredible woman, and who wouldn't want to have Jim as an ex.

I am not a fan of books going to movies, but if this was the script, I would totally go see it!

A Touching Reminder Of A Day That United All Of America....
Where were YOU on the morning of September 11th, 2001? I was at work when Howard Stern reported that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. Having been born and raised in The Bronx before moving to Rochester, N.Y., my workday immediately ended as I focused my full attention on Howard's show; He became my only link to the city I loved and would always call home. Later on came the TV reports and the images that will never leave my mind, but for those first few hours, I sat listening in shock as the man who makes me laugh every workday became my only connection to family, friends, and loved ones who were suddenly living in a war-zone.

9-11: Emergency Relief is a benefit book that is filled with true stories from September 11th. They range from touching, to infuriating, to thought-provoking, and the list of creators reads like a who's who of Indy Comics: James Kochalka, Will Eisner, Tony Millionaire, Harvey Pekar, Tom Hart, Joyce Brabner, Ted Rall, and literally DOZENS of others. Besides being entertaining, and raising money for the Red Cross, the book fulfills another important purpose: It stands as a reminder of a day we must NEVER forget. God Bless America!

Amazing, dense and horrifying
Easily the best of the comics industry's myriad responses to the tragedy of September 11th, this book gets down into the nitty-gritty of human experiences and reactions to tragedy. No superheroes. No larger-than-life expostulation. Just real people - talented artists - telling amazing stories. Higlights include Gregory Benton's "Treasure," an untitled Hutch Owen story by Tom Hart that manages to toe the fine line between rage and sentiment and "Citadel Of The Night" by K. Thor Jensen and Chris Knowle. Honestly, though, the book is so full of great material that nobody should be without it.

Every community library in the country should acquire a copy
After the September 11th terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, some 50 graphic novelists and cartoonist ranging from such legendary names as Will Eisner and Harvey Pekar, to newer talents such as Frank Cho and James Kochalka, came together in a very special project as a way of expressing their grief, patriotism, and support of the American people in the face of naked, lethal, ideologically driven aggression. The result is 9-11: Emergency Relief, a powerful graphic novel. The proceeds will go to benefit the American Red Cross. Simply put, every school and every community library in the country should acquire a copy of 9-11: Emergency Relief for the edification of their students and their patrons.

Chi Fitness : A Workout for Body, Mind, and Spirit
Published in Paperback by HarperResource (August, 2002)
Authors: Sue Benton and Drew Denbaum
Average review score:

INCREASES YOUR FEELING OF WELL-BEING!
As a follower of Eastern philosophies (Buddhism) the concept of increasing life force energy (chi)is a common practice for me. I cannot say enough about this fantastic book and the program found within it. Each of us has the power to increase our emotional, physical and spiritual well-being and the guidelines found here are an excellent place to start. Negative emotions such as anger, worry, jealousy, fear and sadness deplete our chi energy often leaving us feeling tired, stressed-out, depressed, and unfulfilled. By using "chakras," energy centres which correspond to parts of the body, particularly our emotions, we have the ability to improve our quality of life and follow a path to inner peace and tranquility. For those who have found the benefits of meditation, you will find this book to be of particular interest. This is an excellent, well-written book and by following the principles it contains, the reader has the potential to reduce stress and live a more productive, happy, well-balanced life.

A book to treasure.
Having been very active in the pursuit of physical fitness for many years, this book is a most welcome breath of fresh air. The movements and practices are eloquently detailed, and the entire concept just seems to flow naturally, without overwhelming even the novice in spiritual development (like me). I read through the entire book once and keep going back to different chapters, learning a little bit more about myself each time. It makes perfect sense, and it's like giving yourself a gift. I honestly can't imagine anyone NOT benefiting from "Chi Fitness".

It changed my life!
I've incorporated Chi Fitness into my life for the last three years. It's really changed my perspective on how important it is to be in tune with your body, and how your body needs to release emotions that affect us from childhood and our current lives. Since I'm so much more in touch with my feelings and my needs, I'm more centered and able to enjoy each day as a special gift. I highly recommend this book and anything else these authors may publish.

Cooking With Pomiane
Published in Paperback by North Point Press (October, 1994)
Authors: Edouard De Pomiane, Edouard De Pomiane, and Peggie Benton
Average review score:

magnifique!
This is the one cooking book I reach for time and time again. Everything in here turns out fabulously well, and the text is so humorous and engaging, I find myself just reading it for pleasure. One word of warning; it will require some adaptations if you are on a fat free diet, as many of the recipes are loaded with butter and cream. Of course, that's what makes them so delicious!
Try this book, it's the best.

Cooking With Pomiane
Food scientist Edouard de Pomiane turned the world of French cuisine on its ear with his beautifully simple approach to classic cooking. With over 300 recipes and many amusing anecdotes, and a fond introduction by renowned food writer Elizabeth David, COOKING WITH POMAINE remains a treasured resource for cooks of all kind.

I Smell Something Yummy!
This is my favourite cookbook-- or should I say my favourite food cookbook (The Anarchist's Cookbook is my fave overall). There are lots of recipes in here for all dishes and occasions- be it a fancy dinner or a not-so-fancy dessert- and the good news is, most of them are of the minimalist tradition, so no complicated procedures or fancy-schmansy ingredients. Just plain old good food, and believe me, if you follow Pomiane's and tips, you'll be cooking like a pro in no time!

wonderful book
This book was very good. I personally loved it. It has real life events that is inspiring and helpful. Carmen takes several wrong turns in her journey through life but it all works out in the end.

I liked it!
I really recommend this book to anyone, but especially to teens. I have read it 3 times! This book is really an eye opener about drugs and about Christ. I would really like to read more books like this.

I thought it was a really great book.
I never finished the book but I got through most of it to where she went back to Bud for some heroine after she got into the fight with that girl. But I really liked what I read and I would like to buy it but I don't know where to find it. It really opened my eyes. I think every teenager should read it.

This Is My Beloved
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1949)
Author: Walter Benton
Average review score:

Whether you've found love, or lost love, read this book!
No other love poem has ever moved me as much as This is My Beloved. I had two copies, gave a friend one, and plan to buy another because I left my copy behind when I left the US a year ago.

But if you want to have your cake and eat it too, you should listen to the LP with music by Herbie Mann, if I remember correctly after 20 or more years, and the late Laurence Harvey. I don't know if the record is available.

This is My Beloved always takes me to another place. It's always better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

UNFORGETTABLE
This book took my breath away-
I gave it to my fiancee as a birthday gift in August 2000-
he carried it with him- everywhere even on the plane-on business trips to Europe-he said that until he fell in love-he would have never understood it-but if you are madly in love-it is so moving it is almost hurtful.
Sometimes it is so moving- he had to stop reading-one just read a few pages at a time.
He died suddenly on February 18, 2000-
and this has great meaning for me.

Read over and over, then years later...understanding arrives
Mark Hamilton enscribed a copy on 3 July 1964 To Jeanne, My Beloved, Mark. This birthday was like no other. Reading the words, seeing the images and feeling beloved stopped time. The blush from head to toe as I was younger in years and knowledge than I am now, recurred each time I read this book. It has been on the shelf for years now; periodic readings have not diminished the force of feeling beloved or loving another as Walter portrays. I picked it up 2 December 1997, noticed for the first time such details as printed in 1943, reprinted twenty nine times and, of course, Knopf name which always spelled quality to me. Curious as to whether this book could work its magic, I read August 9 entry about the forgetting in each season, a favorite, and wept. Reading the other journal entries of love found, lost, found and lost ever more, I came here to order another copy or two as the magic continues. I have been learning to write poems by writing them. Walter's poems suggest I have a ways to go before my beloveds over time are as well enshrined.

400 Hours: A Father's Journal of his Daughter's Kidnap and Murder
Published in Hardcover by Aweigh Pub Co (01 January, 2000)
Author: Keith Benton Calhoun
Average review score:

Friend of Hollie's
I actually had the extreme fortune of working with Hollie at the local grocery store in Madison, MS in the early 90's and I found out about her death when I was at home visiting from college in ATL. I was mortified to find out that she was killed and even more so that anybody would do that to her. She was THE most caring, honest and funniest person I've ever known. She was amazing! I can only imagine the pain it is for Mr. Calhoun father to write such an in-depth account on the loss of not only his daughter, but Hollie, as a person. I didn't believe it was about her until I saw her picture on the inside flap cover. This book doesn't even convey how good a person Hollie really was and its even more heartbreaking for me because I really knew her. A phrase that Hollie would say everytime she was right about something, "Thank you for playing!" I still use it today.

It Rings True
I lost my brother in an accidental gunshot incident many years ago. That was horrific enough but couple that with murder and abduction and hours of not knowing and you have a true nightmare. This is a rare man who is able to reveal his innermost private feelings about the loss of his daughter. One reels as he describes the numbness, disorientation, and "inappropriate" acting out behaviors which run the gamut of emotions which he experienced. This book inevitably triggers one's own feelings about the out-of-body fog that accompanies the loss of a loved one. He knows correctly that it will never be over, his pain merely gradually muted a little more as each year passes. The sense of disbelief and wondering what might have been will never go away. Rather than being a downer, this book refreshes with its honesty.

A Fathers Grieves
I found 400 Hours to be an extremely poignant and gut wrenching story. The authors pain was horrific.I came away feeling that I knew the entire family and had somehow gone through the entire grieving process with them. It's all there. The author made it easy to read by weaving in and out of the various family members and how they each came to grips with the loss of Hollie.I highly recommend this book.

The New First Three Years of Life
Published in Paperback by Holiday House (August, 1995)
Author: Benton L. White
Average review score:

Not everybody has common sense.
My parents made a lot of mistakes so I had to teach myself how to approach parenthood by reading books and observing other parents. I also sat in on some of Burton White's parenting classes in Newton, MA. This book is very well researched. The bibliography is excellent, too. I read through most it including Childhood and Society by Eric Ericson. Burton White and Eric Ericson both recommend something called "Mutual Regulation". The parent is in control and firm for some things and the child gets to control and lead for others. It's worth studying. Mutual regulation also applies to other relationships. My journey of reading, starting with this book, has helped me to become "unspoiled and happy" so now I am no longer terrified of becoming a parent.

If your parents were terrific, you may find this book to be full of "common sense".

Great for the toy recommendations alone
When I was a new mother, for the toy recommendations alone, I found this book of great and indispensable value. (Though I was using an earlier edition, I am sure the toy recommendations are still as useful.) Dr. White tells you which toys are worthwhile and which are a waste of time and money. Often, the most expensive toys are the ones that may make the parents or grandparents or whoever feel good, but that are not useful or interesting to the baby or young child. With Dr. White's recommendations, you can avoid buying the useless toys and instead spend the money on something of true value for your child.

Also, sometimes a toy doesn't look like much and may be overlooked by a parent, but can provide a child with hours of enjoyment. And for that matter, there are things around the house that a child can enjoy that cost nothing, such as plastic mixing bowls and other safe cookware. My daughter had her own cupboard of safe things so she could keep herself occupied while staying with me in the kitchen. (The other cupboards had child safety latches on them.) She loved it, and so did I.

Probably the one thing that Dr. White did not emphasize enough in the edition I was using was the importance of reading to your child, starting at an early age and continuing until they no longer want you to read to them. Literacy is of vital importance to anyone, and it starts with being read to often. And not just read to, but read to in a loving, interactive way, where the child is allowed to ask questions and where the pictures and story are open to discussion.

So remember to buy books for your children, your nieces and nephews and other young relatives, and the children of your friends, and to read those books to them when possible.

If you can afford only one childcare book, buy this one!
We bought this book when our son was born in 1990. After having read other experts (Leach, Brazelton, Spock), we decided that this was the best of the lot--followed closely by Brazelton. White discusses each significant stage of a vey young child's growth and tells the new parent what he/she may expect.

The world renouned Missouri Parents as Teachers program is based upon this book. We are from Missouri but did not elect to enroll our child in the program until we read Burton White.

We have bought this book for just about everyone we know who was having a baby and we're still buying it!

Air Force Officer's Guide (31st Ed)
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (July, 1996)
Author: Jeffrey C. Benton
Average review score:

Out of date
The Air Force has changed greatly since this book was published. Good only for general information, look elsewhere for up-to-date and detailed infomation.

A very good book for anyone
This book has very good reading material for anyone, not just military people. Especially good reading on leadership and morality. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone. The military information in it is also very useful for new officer's.

Excellent resource for any USAF officer or officer candidate
The "Air Force Officer's Guide, 31st Edition" is an excellent resource for any USAF officer. Whether they be an officer candidate, newly appointed officer, or senior officer, there is something here for all. I have it in my library, on the reference bookshelf, within arm's reach anytime I am working at my computer station.

Very thorough review of the following subject areas:
PART ONE: THE PROFESION OF ARMS-
The professional officer, the code of service, leadership, responsibilities of command.

PART TWO: AIR FORCE ORGANIZATION-
DoD, Department of Air Force, and reserve components.

PART THREE: CAREER AND ADVANCEMENT-
Everything from training and development to fitness and promotability factors. Also, the evaluation system is "de-mystified."

PART FOUR: THE AIR FORCE WAY-
Customs and courtesies, uniforms and insignia, badges, decorations, service medals and ribbons, and a very timely section of social life in the Air Force. A good section of material related to "being the officer's spouse." Many of the common tactical errors made in social settings may be avoided by reviewing this section before attending a "Dining-In" or "Dining-Out."

PART FIVE: BENEFITS AND RESTRICTIONS-
Career, pay and personal allowances, leave, medical care, voluntary and involuntary seperations, seperation benefits.

PART SIX: PERSONAL AFFAIRS-
Legal documents and assistance, financial security for your family, overseas assignment matters

APPENDICES-
Appendix A: Initial active duty and follow-on.
Appendix B: Air University suggested professional reading guide.
Appendix C: USAF bases.
Appendix D: Selected air force publications.
Appendix E: Selected acronyms.
Index and a section of color plates os medals.

I have gone back to this book several times, and so will any other reader with ties to the United States Air Force. For the junior officer or the officer candidat!e in particular, this is a very inexpensive education in professional officership. Years of experience are contained in these 349 pages. One does not have to learn by graduating from the "University of Hard Knocks" if they apply what is contained in these pages.
